How much scholarship assistance can I receive?
The maximum award is typically 50% of course tuition. The size of the scholarship award is based on many financial and motivational factors. Each candidate must submit a complete scholarship application for review. It is not possible to "predict" the amount of the scholarship award without viewing the required financial documents.
What does a scholarship cover?
Scholarships are applied to tuition only. Students are responsible for covering fees, travel expenses, clothing costs, and other costs incurred.
Will my scholarship transfer if I transfer courses?
No. Your application will need to be re-submitted to the Scholarship Committee for review if you switch courses.
Can I apply for the Pinnacle Scholarship?
The Pinnacle Scholarship Program works exclusively with youth from partnering youth leadership organizations. This scholarship program is not open to the general public.
Can I apply for a Leadership Award?
Leadership Awards are awarded through partnering high schools. General scholarship students are not eligible to receive scholarship funding through Leadership Awards.
Are there merit-based scholarships available?
We have two merit-based scholarships available each year. Please see the information on the Outward Bound and Marmot Leadership Scholarships.
Why do I have to fill out the financial info and send in my tax forms for the Outward Bound Leadership Scholarship?
We ask for this information in case you do not receive the Outward Bound Leadership Scholarship and want to be considered for one of our need based scholarships instead.
Questions on the Application or Supporting Documents
If I am under 21, but self-supporting, do I still need to provide my parents’ financial information and obtain their signatures?
Yes, you are required by law to do so. If you are under 21 and self-supporting we still need this information but encourage you to explain in the letter of financial need what your financial circumstances are and the fact that your parents do not support you. Please note, if your parents are paying for your college tuition, we assume that they are supporting you.
Who would be put under “Amount of Aid from Other Sources”?
Aunty Betty, other family, friends, school, religious organization, etc.
What if I don’t file taxes?
Explain in detail why (this could go in the explanation of financial need), and attach appropriate documentation.
What if I am in foster care or a ward of the state?
If the applicant is a ward of the state or in foster care we need documentation stating this. We need to know how much the child receives from the state for expenses and if there is other funding available to be used to help pay for the Outward Bound course. We normally do not need info on the foster parents unless they provide support for the child.
Who do I contact if I have other scholarship questions or need assistance in filling out the application?
For general scholarship questions, please contact Laura Barrett at 888-837-5204 or via email at scholarships@outwardbound.org.
