Introduction
In 1998, the Hurricane Island Outward Bound School (HIOBS), now
part of Outward Bound Wilderness, established the Leadership Award,
a full-tuition scholarship program for junior-year high school students
from across the country. Unlike general scholarship funding, which
is given based on student's financial need, the Leadership Award
is designated for students who demonstrate an interest in community
service and display untapped leadership potential. The Leadership
Award is not meant for students who already display strong leadership
skills.
Participating schools are designated across the United
States by individual donors. Teachers and staff serve an important
roll in identifying candidates and ultimately select the recipient
for this award.

serves.
Those students who demonstrate an interest in community service
and display untapped leadership potential are given priority for
nomination. The selection of the student is not based on financial
need.
To help identify potential award winners, selection processes may
include:
Student essays
Applications or questionnaires designed by school staff
Student presentations or interviews
Nomination by former Outward Bound alumni, school staff, or teachers
