Sierra Rock Climbing Expedition

This is mobile back country rock climbing expedition. It is wilderness based but students may spend 2 days at a time at various awesome rock climbing sites. Students should be prepared to work hard, have fun, learn technical skills and build a solid foundation for going climbing on you own.

The High Sierra Rock Camp is designed to expose the beginning climber to a wide range of options within climbing. Set in an area exclusive to Outward Bound in the Sierra National Forest, the radical granite faces offer students the perfect setting to learn and hone their rock climbing skills. This course takes place in the Courtright Reservoir area of the Sierra Nevada. Upon entering this climbing area, you might think you are in Tuolumne Meadows in Yosemite National Park, but without all the crowds. This magnificent place is hidden in the High Sierra Mountains, elevation 8,000 feet, and is filled with an incredible amount of high quality granite. Notable holes and pockets upon the rock face of Courtright make it so unique. The many domes in this area offer a wide variety of climbs to all levels of climbers. Courtright is predominately filled with steep slab and face routes; although a plethora of crack routes do exist. There is a plentiful array of long climbing routes ranging anywhere between 50 to 800 feet in height! Enjoy this beautiful granite climbing in the High Sierras during the warm summer months.

The Outward Bound Difference
Successful completion of your course demands mastery of skills, trust, fitness, confidence, tenacity, leadership, initiative and compassion. The promotion of these qualities, and the discovery of what’s in you, is the purpose of Outward Bound. Come travel with Outward Bound and reach some of the most beautiful terrain in the country.

Course Description
The Sierra Rock Climbing course is designed to educate, as well as intrigue, the beginning climber, exposing him or her to various aspects of the sport. Set in an area exclusive to Outward Bound in the Sierra National Forest, the radical granite faces offer students the perfect setting to learn and hone their rock climbing skills. After arriving in Fresno, CA, students move into the Sierra National Forest. Here they establish base camp for a few days, which will allow them to maximize their time on the "crag." Days on course include a mix of travel, teaching and climbing with hikes to backcountry crags and peaks.

Students will simultaneously learn the techniques and equipment for both safe back-country living and technical rock-climbing. Experience a wide variety of climbing, including crack routes, face climbs, and bouldering. You will also learn gear placement, basic anchor systems, belaying, and rappelling. A typical day will involve moving camp to a new climbing site, learning and practicing climbing skills, then honing the camping skills that will allow you to do it again the next day. Completion of the course will give a person the ability to live in the back-country, move smoothly over stone, a knowledge enabling you to set up and use top-rope anchor systems, and the ability to rappel safely. You will receive personal feedback from instructors in order to progress towards your climbing goals.

NOTE: This Rock Climbing course is a back country expedition with a focus on rock climbing. You will do a lot of climbing but you will backpack with climbing gear, group and personal gear nearly every day. Your daily miles will not take you as far but you will carry packs heavier than the typical backpacking packs.
