Joshua Tree Rock Climbing

This is not a backpacking course. It is a front country or back-country basecamp oriented week of rock climbing in the world famous Joshua Tree National Park. It is an ideal course for those looking for the physical challenge of climbing rocks. Technical skills are a theme of the course but mental challenges may be the most intriguing.

Joshua Tree National Park is an excellent location to learn and practice rock-climbing skills. There are thousands of established climbing routes in this magical, unique landscape. Joshua trees and other surreal plants surround the bizarre and jumbled rock formations. Climbers from all over the world have been climbing on the granite rock of “Josh” since the 1940’s. The faces and cracks of this incredible place offer challenges for climbers of all abilities. The sunny weather of the Mojave Desert allows climber’s ample opportunity to experience this first class climbing area.

The Outward Bound Difference
This course may be the hardest thing you have ever done. Outward Bound philosophy maintains that by facing the challenges the course will offer you, you will emerge physically and mentally stronger, with an increased mastery of expedition skills as well as a better understanding of your own capabilities. We think that the payoff is well worth the work, but you should be aware of what you’re getting into and excited about tackling the challenges.

Course Description
You will set up camp at either a Joshua Tree National Park campground or on Outward Bound land. Front country camping allows you more time to immerse your self in the course curriculum. You will travel each day to specific climbing sites in school vehicles or by foot. This course is designed for beginning to intermediate rock climbers in order to gain the skills necessary to be effective top rope climbers. You will wake up with the sun and travel back to base with the setting sun. Each day there is a different focus. The lessons are short with ample time to learn experientially. You will learn and continually refine your movement skills through out the course. Lessons in anchor building and protection placement allow you the opportunity to build your own climbing anchors. You will learn how to manage your risk while rappelling. Learn about access issues relevant to climbers and other land users. At camp you will cook and eat with other group members. This is a great time to get to know each other and share life stories and impressions. Each evening there will be group discussions to review the day and offer time for reflection. The instructor to student ratio is never more than 1:4. This allows you to receive personal coaching on the physical techniques of climbing. Craftsmanship, physical fitness, and self-reliance are some of the “pillars” that support Outward Bound. These cornerstones are also important values for climbers. This course will enable you to actively learn the skills to become a self-sufficient and knowledgeable rock climber.
