Exumas Bahamas Sea Kayaking - Adult Renewal

The tropical Exumas are the perfect setting for a sea kayaking expedition fostering renewal and rejuvenation. With instruction in paddling strokes, you’ll skim over the incandescent, transparent waters. Snorkeling allows you to discover the world below the surfaces that teems with life. Hike to Perry’s Peak to say you’ve stood at the highest point in the Exumas – a mere 356 feet above sea level. In addition to environmental study of the human impact on island ecology, activities are crafted to provoke discussion and reflection on your personal journey in life.

The Exumas chain of the Bahamas is comprised of more than 360 cays or islands, mostly uninhabited, that stretch for about 130 miles. The incandescent waters surrounding the Exumas cays -- always above 75 degrees F and some of the clearest and most colorful on Earth-- consist of underwater limestone and coral reefs, blue holes, caves and marine life like butterfly, angel and parrot fish, starfish, stingrays, sand dollars and three types of sea turtles.

The Outward Bound Difference… On this course run by North Carolina Outward Bound School, you’ll experience the Bahamas in ways most people don't: all the beauty of place (clear turquoise waters, warm winter temps, sea life) but a sea kayaking expedition in the Exumas allow these to be experienced in a primitive, non-commercialized setting (isolated, uninhabited beaches). Students develop leadership, independence, decision-making and responsibility. Through challenge and adventure, you discover you are capable of more than you thought possible.

Adult Renewal courses combine the adventure and challenge of an Outward Bound experience with structured time for participants to reflect and gain new insight and perspective.

No wilderness or outdoor experience is necessary, and you do not have to be an athlete to participate. However, all participants are encouraged to physically prepare for the course. On this Adult Renewal course, instructors approach the physical challenge of a wilderness expedition through the lens of renewal/rejuvenation and, as on all courses, adapt to the needs of the group.

You’ll develop teamwork while working together to find your way, set up camp, cook your own meals over a camp stove and learn Leave No Trace techniques to minimize your impact on the land. Solo is a time for reflection and rest at an individual campsite.

Students should come with a strong commitment to enjoy a fun and exciting course but also to tackle the physical challenges of sea kayaking in what can be a harsh environment as well as the mental challenges of living with and traveling in a group. Successful completion of your course demands mastery of skills, trust, fitness, confidence, tenacity, leadership, initiative and compassion.

Adult Renewal courses are popular with adults in transition or who are just feeling the hunger for insight. Instructors facilitate sharing of life experiences amongst the group and craft course activities in ways that offer you the opportunity to examine where you have been, where you are now and where you would like to go in life.
