I was watching the news yesterday about the awful fires in
Colorado, and started thinking about whether it was affecting
current Outward Bound courses. I then remembered that C-49
was in progress thirty-two years ago. Actually, 32 years ago
today was the seventh day of 26 on that course.
My journal entry to June 12, 1970: "Woke up frozen. must not have shaken out my bag.
Had a real good hot breakfast. Lowell sick.
Broke camp to go up to Cataract Lake via Cataract Gulch.
About 1/3 of way up, we turned around and saw the most beautiful
white mountain with bright sun on it.
All the way up we have been going by this rushing mtn.
stream. What a sound. Just saw tiny bits of snow floating
down from pines into the sunlight. Looked like pieces of silver.
Blisters acting up again but a feeling of optimism exists
within me. I'm getting in better shape and feel that I should
be able to climb mtn's.
Stopped for lunch at 12:30. Beautiful warm+ sunny+ view
of Sunshine Mtn.
Going to cross stream on log just above a waterfall!
Hiked until 5 and arrived at Continental Divide. We bivouacked
there. When setting up, wind was 40 mph! Got tents up and
had tea + macaroni + cheese. Very cold, but a good day. Went
7-8 miles uphill. Very cold, poor night on cont. div."
I just wanted to say it still means a lot to me to have gone
on that course. What is learned really helps you survive all
the crazy things that happen in life. As I'm sure you know,
what you're doing is valid and important and is a life changing
experience with permanence to it. I hope things go well for
all of you the rest of the Summer.
